Dhifm invited me as a guest to their 'Wataniya Morning Maldives' show today. The main topic was astronomy and the fact that today the sun would be right above Male' at midday.
A caller from one of the northernmost atolls enquired as to when she would be able to experience an overhead sun at her location. I told her that the sun is currently moving northwards on its annual migration towards the Tropic of Cancer, and that she will be able to experience the overhead sun within the next couple of days.
So, for the residents of the northern atolls, here's a table that I made to give you an indication of the movement of the sun northwards.
Date | Declination of the Sun | Nearest Islands |
Thursday, 2nd April | 4°42' N | K. Gaafaru |
Friday, 3rd April | 5°05' N | B. Eydhafushi |
Saturday, 4th April | 5°28' N | Lh. Naifaru, Felivaru, Madivaru, Hinnavaru; R. Iguraidhoo, Meedhoo |
Sunday, 5th April | 5°51' N | N. Landhoo, Maafaru; R. Vaadhoo |
Monday, 6th April | 6°13' N | Sh. Maakandoodhoo |
Tuesday, 7th April | 6°36' N | HDh. Kulhudhuffushi |
Wednesday, 8th April | 6°59' N | HA. Ihavandhoo, Mulhadhoo, Manafaru Resort |
Once the sun reaches the Tropic of Cancer on 21st June it will start it migration back southwards towards the Tropic of Capricorn. During this southward journey the sun will be above the Maldives from 3rd to 25th of September.
